What is the junction documentary project?

This project was set up along side the Junction promo project which is a promo video project whereby 3 groups within our class have been set the task to create a promotional trailer to gain the interest of other local Cambridgeshire bands, and get them to play at the Junction venue.

Our job as the documentary group is to create a skill-set video lasting approximately 6-10 minutes. Within these minutes we have to include interviews, footage of the fiver event, samba workshop, cutaways, and voice overs. Within these categories we will have to include interviews with staff at the Junction and staff at long road and Bournemouth. The main aim for this documentary is to show the link between how students from Long road CRaM course have been working alongside the Junction to create media products.

Research into other media diploma documentaries / videos

I have discovered that many creative media diploma videos are structured in a very stylistic way which is very informative towards the audience. The videos which I have watched also have the audience in mind all the way through, which are students and teachers.

The main things to focus on and take from these videos when we are producing our documentary are as follows:
  • The style of the video itself
  • The structure of the videos
  • The actual message given out within the video
  • Keep the audience in mind
  • Ensure that everyone us credited and also that when they are interviewed that their name appears at the start
  • Overall make sure that it is stylistic and informative

Progress report 3

In todays session we have completed a variety of tasks, which are listed below:
  • We have made a start on the rough cut and have completed it to the best of our ability
  • Model release forms have been signed by every one within our group and spare copies /templates have been printed for other people who appear in our documentary
  • Extra documentation such as risk assessments have been organized
  • Collected documents for my individual folder and also given out copies to everyone within the documentary group
  • Emailed long road to ask permission to hold an interview with Sandra hamilton fox
  • The research team have found logos and also information on who is who within our documentary (Skill-set, Long Road sixth form, diploma, The junction,Bournemouth etc..)
We still have the following to complete as a group:
  • Full rough cut for sending to bournemouth (if possible)
  • Extra documentation for folder / blog work etc
  • I personally need to organize final roles / tasks for everyone to do over half term and also for bournemouth visit etc
  • Organize everything properly and officially and hold more group discussions!

Overall the project is going well so far and we are making steady progress within this project, we are getting organized and sorting out paper work for bournemouth visit etc so that may be the reason why we are slightly behind on our schedule, but as I said above we are making steady progress and working well on our tasks.

Progress report 2

In todays session we have completed a variety of tasks, which are listed below:

The footage of the fiver has been logged and organized for the edit of the rough cut which is underway (Philippa & Matt)

We have organized a shot list and model release forms for the bournemouth visit (including a plan of what to do when we are there etc) (Mike)

We have conducted an interview with Pete and also filmed he promo groups working in todays session, which is in the editing process at the moment. (Mike / Kirk)

I have had a brief discussion with Pete (teacher) and organized what documentation is needed including (health and safety and risk assessment forms etc)

We still have the following to complete as a group:
  • Complete the overall rough cut of the video
  • Research into other educational doc (skill set etc)
  • Complete and print of model release forms and other documentation prior to the bournemouth trip
  • Make sure there is a full plan constructed BEFORE half term

Overall the project is going well so far and as-long as I can organize tasks for everyone to do for each session then it should all go very smoothly.

Plan for todays lesson

I have assigned tasks for everyone to do in todays session, which are shown below:

Philippa & Matt - Sort through fiver footage for documentary, start putting the clips together into a rough cut sequence (i.e. interview with Simon bates and footage of students filming the fiver)

Mike - Organize shot list for bournemouth, organize / type up questions for interviews (Teachers, promo students, bournemouth etc)

Myself (Kirk) - Organize group blog and also upload more group photos to flickr page for groups to use within their blog work etc, also help out anyone in my group who needs it

Dave and joe did not attend todays session, so I will update them on what they have missed during tomorrows session if they arrive.

I have also organized a brief 'to-do' list for the rest of todays session and also for tomorrows lesson, which is shown below:
  • To record promo groups working in todays session and also organize documents for the bournemouth trip and also for the rest of this week
  • Upload any new footage to the documentary edit timeline / sequence etc ready for philippa and dave to work on
  • Model release forms for use when interviewing people and filming people etc
  • Interview promo groups
  • Review of risk assessment
  • Planning for trip to bournemouth
  • Look at other documentaries and note down the structure of them
  • Select suitable footage to send to bournemouth to edit (interviews, shots of students working at Junction etc)

Model Release Form

Here is a copy of the model release form that people need to sign in order for us to film them.

Bournemouth Shot List

Here is a shot list that us, the documentary group, need to film when we go to Bournemouth on Monday 22nd February 2010.

1)Open with the coach journey down to Bournemouth.
2)Establishing shots of the university and signs “Welcome to Bournemouth
university”.
3)Shot of the university students talking to the class and shots of the students
listening to them.
4)Shots of Long Road students being helped by University students.
5)Interviews with a University of students. Possibly interview 2 students.
6)Shots of all the Long Road students working.
7)Interview with some Long Road students about what they got out of going
to bournemouth for the day.
8)Interview with a University teacher. (This may not be needed)
9)A shot of the Long Road students finishing for the day and heading back to
the coach, the journey back to Long Road.

All of the shots have been listed in the order in which they will be filmed to make the edit easier.

We need to be flexible with the footage, not to shoot too much, but to make sure we film everything we need. Here is a screenshot of the shot list being created.

Pete Interview Questions

Here is a list of the questions used for the interview with Pete.

1) Could you explain who you are and what you do?

2) What's your involvement within the Junction project? Would you say you have a specific role?

3) Could you give a brief outline of the project?

4) What do you hope the students can get out of working with the Junction?

5) Can you see any further opportunities arising from this project?

Thank you for taking the time out for us to interview you.

Here is also a screen grab of the questions being typed up.
